Indianoverseas bank History
Indian Overseas Bank (IOB) was founded on 10 February 1937 by Mr. MCTM Chidambaram Chettiar who was a pioneer in various fields like banking, insurance and industry. The bank was founded with two objectives – foreign exchange business and specialty in foreign banking.
A unique feature of IOB was that on 10 February 1937 (on the inauguration day itself) the business was started simultaneously in 3 branches – in Karaikkudi and Chennai in India and in Burma in Rangoon where another branch opened in Penang. At the time of independence, IOB had 38 branches in India and 7 branches abroad. The amount deposited at that time was Rs.3.23 crore.
During this period, IOB expanded its domestic activities and expanded its international banking operations. The bank established a training center which developed into a staff college in Chennai. In addition, there are 9 staff training centers in the country. IOB was the first bank to initiate consumer loans.
