Histroy

It is the apex institution for housing finance in India. It was established on 9 July 1988 under an Act of Parliament, namely the National Housing Bank Act, 1987, which was intended to act as a principal agency for the upgradation of housing finance institutions and to provide financial and other support to such institutions. . The Act, inter alia, authorizes the National Housing Bank to: –

Issuing instructions to housing finance institutions to ensure their growth on sound financial basis;
1. Grant of loans and advances to scheduled banks, housing finance institutions or any other authority established under Central, State or Provincial Act, engaged in slum redevelopment; And
2. To raise resources for the purpose of housing and to prepare schemes to provide loans for housing.
